Boards and Committees to Follow
Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAP)
This sub-committee of the City Council reviews matters relating to the Inspectional Services Department, Planning Department, Conservation Commission, and Historic Commission, and passes on their recommendations to the full Council.
Public meeting cadence: second and fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 PM.
Land Use Committee
This sub-committee of the City Council reviews matters relating to Special Permits, Site Plan Approval petitions; zone change petitions, and preservation housing proposals among other items. The committee passes on any recommendations to the full Council.
Public meeting cadence: the Tuesday following the first and third Monday of the month at 7:00 PM.
Planning and Development Department
This department of City of Newton employees coordinates current and future planning for the city concerning housing, transportation, climate, economy, and preservation. The department both presents recommendations to the Mayor and City Council and receives requests from the Mayor and City Council.
Planning and Development Board
This board of appointed Newton residents reviews changes or updates to the comprehensive plan, zoning ordinances, and allocation of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and HOME funds. They make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.
Public meeting cadence: the first Monday of the month at 7:00 PM.
Community Preservation Committee (CPC)
This committee of appointed Newton residents reviews housing, open space, and historical projects and recommends whether Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds will be spent on those projects. The recommendations go to the City Council.
Public meeting cadence: the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM.
Newton Housing Partnership (NHP)
The mission of the NHP is to foster and support the preservation and creation of housing in order to promote an economically diverse City of Newton. With this mission, the NHP is an advisory body to the Mayor, City staff, City Council, Boards, Commissions, and Committees on Newton's housing needs, policies, programs, zoning and specific proposals.
Public meeting cadence: the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 PM.
Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA)
This board interprets and enforces the City’s Zoning Ordinance. The ZBA has the power to hear and decide petitions for appeals of zoning orders, Variances, and Comprehensive Permits under Chapter 40B.
Public meeting cadence: the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM.
Newton Fair Housing Committee
The committee aims to ensure that policies and practices relating to fair housing are interwoven into the operations and activities of the City as well as the fabric of the community. The committee advises the mayor, City Council, and all Newton City organizations.
Public meeting cadence: the first Wednesday of the month at 8:00 AM.
